Text: Calculus (8e), Anton, Bivens and Davis (Wiley).
Prerequisites: You may enroll in Math 2414 if you have completed Calculus I (MATH 2413).
Course Description: Integration techniques (substitution, trig substitution, integration by parts, partial fractions, etc.); integration applications (volumes of surfaces of revolution, work, arc length, etc.), sequences, series, and Taylor series.
Make-Up Policy: If you must miss class for a legitimate reason, such as participation in a university activity, hospitalization, etc., I will grant a make-up for any missed work, provided that I am given sufficient notice of said absence and satisfactory evidence that it is legitimate. Oversleeping, for example, does not constitute a legitimate absence. If you’re not sure, ask.
Midterm examination: 25%
Final examination 25%
Computer laboratory assignments 25%
Miscellaneous 25%
What is in the “Miscellaneous” category, anyway? I expect that the Miscellaneous category will comprise in-class work such as homework, quizzes (including two longer “skills” computation quizzes), and journal assignments. I will administer two “skills” quizzes; one on integration techniques and one on series. I will announce dates as the quizzes draw closer. Please note that I will assign a great deal of homework that will not be collected. While I will collect homework to be graded on a regular basis, it will be very difficult to succeed in calculus without spending a significant amount of non-classroom time working problems, which is what the non-graded problem sets are designed to help you do.
Computer Laboratory Assignments: You must attend the section of lab for which you have enrolled. We only have a certain number of computers, and if you attend an alternate lab section, you will not have a computer to work on. Associated with this lecture time are lab sections .001, which meets 11-12.15 T, and .002, which meets 2-3.15 T. All labs meet in HPR 135.
Disability Statement: If you have a disability, including a learning disability, for which you request an accommodation, please contact Ida MacDonald in the Disability Support Services offices so that appropriate arrangements may be made. In accordance with federal law, a student requesting accommodation must provide documentation of his/her disability to the Disability Support Services counselor. For more information, call or visit the Student Services Centre, Room 111 in the University Centre. The telephone number is 566.7079 (TDD 565.5579).
Social Security Statement: It is the policy of The University of Texas at Tyler to protect the confidential nature of social security numbers. The University has changed its computer programming so that all students have an identification number.
Grade Replacement: If you are repeating this course for a grade replacement, you must file an intent to receive grade forgiveness with the registrar by the 12th day of class. Failure to file an intent to use grade forgiveness will result in both the original and repeated grade being used to calculate your overall grape point average. A student will receive grade forgiveness (grade replacement) for only three (undergraduate student) or two (graduate student) course repeats during his/her career at UT Tyler. (2006-08 Catalog, p. 35)
